The Hagenbeck Zoo is one of the most famous attractions in Hamburg and boasts over 100 years of history. Founded by Carl Hagenbeck, it is considered a pioneer of modern animal husbandry, as he was one of the first to implement cage-free outdoor enclosures. Today, the zoo uniquely combines nature, education, and experience, delighting numerous visitors every year.
At the Hagenbeck Zoo, guests can discover over 1,850 animals from around the world – from elephants, giraffes, and tigers to rare reptiles and fascinating underwater worlds in the Tropic Aquarium. The generously designed outdoor enclosures allow for naturalistic observation of the animals. Feeding the elephants is particularly popular, making the visit an unforgettable experience.
In addition to classic animal enclosures, there is a petting zoo with goats and sheep, adventure playgrounds for children, as well as numerous events such as tours, feeding demonstrations, and holiday programs.
Another highlight is the Tropic Aquarium, which is divided into various themed areas. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of crocodiles, sharks, snakes, lizards, and colorful fish. With its variety of animal species and detailed settings, it is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
Several restaurants, cafés, and snack stands in the zoo cater to visitors' culinary needs. Whether it's snacks for a quick bite, ice cream in the summer, or a warm lunch with a view of the animal exhibits – there is something for everyone. Picnic spots are also available.
